The Problem With Denim

The trouble with denim is easy. Everyone wears it so for years there has been a vacuum around expectations that comes with wearing denim. For fans of the jeans look, the rise of chinos could actually turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to jeans, as people will now take another look at them and decide that there needs to be some knowledge shared as to how to make them look great.

The irony is that is shouldn’t be too difficult to get denim wrong, yet still many men seem to make a complete mess of buying jeans. What are the most common styles and who should wear them?

Boot Cut Jeans

Boot cut styles should be avoided by shorter men at all costs, unless you want to intentionally make yourself look even shorter, which would just be silly.

You will find some who think that boot cut jeans belong in the bin, having had their day and no longer being stylish. However, if you are a tall guy with an athletic physique, then boot cut jeans could be the best option for you.

Straight Cut Jeans

Straighter cuts are the most traditional, classic style, and the one being favoured by many men worldwide now that the clamour for skinny jeans and similar styles has calmed down. Although straight cut jeans are available in a variety of colours, they are often better in darker styles as they will be slimming for larger guys and add definition and shape for skinnier men. They also work excellently as business casual clothing and for substituting directly with formal tailored trousers.

Relaxed Fit

Relaxed jeans are best for larger men, as they will be larger around the thigh but not unflatter you in any respect. If you cannot find relaxed fit jeans suitable for you if you are a thicker-set man, then it may well be worth visiting a tailor and exploring the possibility of having jeans made or professionally adjusted, even if it is a taper in from the knee.

Bulkier men often find that it is their upper legs that hold most of the mass whether it be muscle or fat, and can have trouble when their trousers just go straight down making it look as if their entire leg is the same size.

Other Styles

Carrot fits and skinny jeans are less in vogue than in previous years, however can still be worn stylishly should you choose to go this route. These are best favoured by men of average build who are neither short or tall.
